I have a true passion for Black Canadian History. I love the research I get to do and sharing that information.
Although my formal education in Toronto lacked exposure to these inspiring stories, discovering them later in life has reshaped my perspective on Canadian history. I have gained a profound appreciation for the Black Canadians who pioneered change, overcame systemic adversity, and opened doors for future generations. This work stands as my personal homage to their contributions.

This program has awarded me the opportunity to learn about so much incredible Black history and many important figures doing remarkable things today that Canada is deeply enriched with.
As Black Canadian history was mostly omitted from my own educational upbring, doing this work has inspired in me a stronger sense of pride and responsibility to continue the work of bringing more Black education into classrooms.
Seeing these kids connect something they’ve learned in a presentation to their own life experience and begin to use critical thought is how we set the path for our future change makers.

Growing up it didn't even occur to me that I wasn't learning about Black Canadian history. I was 22 and well into my post secondary education when I took my first history course that talked about any Black Canadian history.
There is nothing more impactful in this program than getting to be the change you want to see in the world. Thanks to all the amazing work Giselle has done, kids across the Lower Mainland don't have to wait until university to realize they missed out on something critical.
Black History isn't limited to just Black History Month, Black History is important all the time and this program is a celebration of that history as much as it is educational.

I recall how fortunate I was to have been brought up in a community where I was surrounded by leaders who looked like me. It was not until I entered University that I realized many people had never shared classrooms, workplaces, or communities with Black individuals.
When I moved to Vancouver just under 20 years ago, I was struck by the limited presence of Black people in a city celebrated for its diversity. Black History Matters serves as a gateway to Black history, culture, arts, and lived experiences to young students who have limited or no exposure to Black people and the contributions we have brought to the world. My colleagues at BHM are a group of Black educated, artistic practitioners who are proud of their heritage and enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and experiences with students.
Through meaningful engagement, we aim to inspire curiosity, foster understanding, and help students develop a richer appreciation for the diversity that strengthens our society.
